RETURN TO TOP ARTIST   STATEMENT

The prairie renders up breathtaking beauty from the frigid cold of a January morning. Refusing to deliver snow, the moisture freezes ice sculptures over the land creating a cloak of fleeting elegance for even the lowliest tumbleweeds.

As the prairie stills in the relentless heat of endless days in the sun, small animals move only with the shade of tall grass and yuccas. Even rattlesnakes den up in the shelter of rocks. Evening thunderclouds taunt the land with empty promises of rain. Menacing fingers of lightening and dusty, hard-driven winds spark and fuel the heart stopping ravages of a prairie fire.

The beauty of the prairie provides me with a kaleidoscope of inspiration. Prairie life cycles in extreme temperatures from arctic cold to desert heat, weather swings from dust storms to monsoons, ranging wildlife from rattlesnakes to awesome elk! The art of hot glass fits perfectly into the prairie cycle from the golden, molten fire of the furnace to the hard, sparkling beauty of the crystal. My Prairie Ice and Prairie Fire collections of glass sculpture capture these awesome, forceful and even magical moments of nature. From delicate, sparkling crystal to the intensity of color, my sculptures reveal the unique and often unsettling beauty of the prairie.

RESUME RETURN TO TOP

I was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. At the University of Kansas I studied glass blowing, ceramics, and sculpture. I graduated in 1980 with a BFA in design with emphasis in art glass. For many years following my graduation, I worked from the studios of other glass artists.

While working in southwest Kansas in the early 1990’s, I not only fell in love with the beauty of the prairie, but also with the wonderful woman who became my wife. We were married in 1995, on a plateau in the heart of the Cimarron National Grasslands.

I finished construction of my own glass studio in Elkhart, Kansas, and lit the furnace in March, 1996..
